I've had the same thing happen as the OP. The bigger impact is moving from a mosty rural to mostly urban commute. I miss the opportunity of getting up to cruising speed and for at least 10-15 minutes at a stretch (hills are a plus). Instead, it's a series of sprints, which is OK, but I'm trying to maintain/lose weight, not build muscle. And for me, the whole point of commuting is getting (enjoyable) aerobic exercise, with a minimum net investment of time, so taking the long way or going for long weekend rides is counterproductive.
