They might have been shocked and surprised that you believed they could do it cheaper. They're almost certainly already using Foxconn or a similar manufacturer, and have lots of R&D to pay off. It's going to be awhile before they can knock 30% off the list price.

By the way, the iBike "power meters" are also well under the $1000 price point, and haven't dominated the market....
