Doesn't sound stupid at all. How are you going to find out if you don't ask? There's nothing wrong with riding a bike like that if that's what you want to do.
Most people who do club rides or faster recreational rides will use drop bars. It's more aerodynamic and gives you more positions.
There's also nithing wrong with downtube shifters, if you like them.
