That definitely used to be true (don't ask me how I know) but not so much anymore. I think the switch to hook bead rims solved that issue. I use an air compressor to inflate bike tires all the time. That's what I like about schrader valves - they are MUCH faster and easier to inflate if you are using an air compressor.
I understand that its easier and I like easy to. I work on somewhere between 50 and 75 bikes per year and was making quick work of the tires with a compressor until I blew about a half dozen. Now go with a pump with a gauge on it like the Park Foot pump
