drawbacks to building up a frame:
tool cost
reseller markup
labor cost

none of which are present if you work at a bike shop, or at least the markup is severely reduced. i mean if you're just getting a bike to say to customers "this is a great bike, i ride one, that's mine in the back right there" then there's really no reason not to get a better bike.
