It mounts to either your helmet or handlebar, but can be used with a strap for off-the-bike use. It's bright so it works well for around camp.

I wouldn't want to carry a bulky lantern normally, but I might consider taking one if I was going to be at the same campsite for a week. This leads to the question: are there any decent battery-powered lanterns out there?

I second the Eos Bike. Bright enough to be a good bike light, and more than enough light ( with the attendant savings in battery life ) for around camp.
