I told him to spray lube on the chain and he asked who uses spray lubes, I responded I do. He brought up wd-40 and I agree with you that wd-40 is NOT a good lubricant, it's good for alot of things but lubing a chain is not one of them because like you say it drys out and leaves the chain unprotected.
