Actually using that "loosening shelf" was standard procedure on older 5/6-speed chains where reusing a pin was normal. Pushing a pin back in to rejoin the chain almost always left that joint too tight and the cure was a very slight push in the opposite direction using the shelf. Moving the pin 0.75 mm was way more than was done then.
