Threads all boogered up for mounting boss for crank removal tool

I am resurrecting an old Schwinn Traveler from the '80s. I am anticipating an problem getting the drive side crank off. The threads where the crank tool mounts to are all boogered up. I haven't tried a tool yet but I don't think it looks good.

Any suggestions before I just start cranking the tool in there to pop the crank off? And part of the issue is that I'm worried that there isn't going to be enough threads to get a good strong hold on the tool if I manage to get it mounted and will pull out when I try to tighten the tool handle to pop it off.
