Replacing small chainring to make hills easier?
I live up a tall, steep hill that is a such a pain to bike up that I avoid biking up it and therefore don't bike. To have an enjoyable ride, I have to take the bike apart, put it in my car, drive down the hill, and reassemble it. It takes me two minutes to ride my bike down it and more than twenty minutes to ride up it.
I think the best thing would be to switch out the small chainring for one with fewer teeth. I have a Giant Avail 3 with an FSA Tempo 30/42/52 crankset. Is it possible to replace the small ring with a smaller one? Can I go as low as 24T? Should I just replace the whole crankset? (I don't want to pay a lot.)
Also, I know that if I practice at it, I'll get stronger and everything. That IS my goal, but I need the process to start off easier. Please help!
