I have never had a Major weight problem but I do keep a careful eye on my weight. I have found the best "Diet" to lose weight is to weigh myself regularly. Keeping an eye on it I can see when the 1 or 2 lbs fluctuation has turned into 4 and do something about it.
But my problem is on those bike rides. Get to the cafe and Pie and a coffee. I sometimes don't have the energy to work off the calories caused by the extra slice.
