They need to have a sufficiently wide spectrum of knowledge that they can suggest sights/etc that are relevant to my interests. I.E., I love museums of all types, so they need to have a good handle on the local ones, a good sense of how long it takes to ride to them, good routes to get there, etc.

They have to be interesting. There's nothing more annoying than a guide who is clearly just putting in time and reciting a pre-written spiel.
