The biggest problem with the iPhone is battery life. Two days ago I went on a long ride with the iPhone set to record the track (using MotionX GPS), with everything (wi-fi, bluetooth, cellular data, 3G) switched off to conserve the battery. I didn't make any calls, didn't use the iPod and didn't try to check maps. Even in that regime, it lasted just under 7 hours before shutting down. Maybe an extended battery would make it more practical.
