You may also incurr the same issue with the front as your older triple is spaced differently so when the shifter tries to put the chain on the big ring the spacing between the rings won't let it. The 'throw' of the FD comes into play here too.

As Bill points out if you already have the parts it doesn't hurt to try.
When I get home, I popping the rear wheel and cleaning the freewheel so I can see what brand it is.

I don't think that the front derailleur will be a problem because the front is a double. If I have to, I could leave some slack in the cable since the pull of a mountain bike shifter is greater than the pull of a road shifter.
