C & V parts and component Failure & Fatigue

I love my old rides, but as I get older I do worry a bit more about cracking a pedal spindle, maybe those sweet engraved bars, death stems, galvanized spokes, or maybe one of my 30or 40 year old forks? I wonder how folks on this board feel about these things. Of course I'm talking about riding nothing but vintage on a regular basis, and the severity of an injury that can result from such a big failure.

I'm sure many of us have inspected and examined many parts during reassembly, and feel comfortable about their old bikes. Or maybe we believe the old stuff may is just better? Does one take greater comfort in a modern 31.8 bar clamp, brand new hubs or rims, or brand new metal that's never been fatigued or hammered? Carbon not included in this discussion of course. What will you not take a chance with?
