Shimano makes a wide range of components, from the lowest level (you can find Shimano derailers on bikes in Walmart) all the way up to the highest end most expensive stuff you find on +$5000 road and MTBs.

If the Schwinn fits you IMO it's not a bad bike, but I feel like you could do better for the money if you keep looking and maybe have a friend who knows about bikes go with you to look at these. It's harder to tell you blindly over the internet what is a good/bad deal without being able to see the bikes in person. Also, the good deals go immediately on craigslist so if you want them you don't have time to ask here if it's a good deal. Someone else will buy it first.
