My father went through the usual bicycle during the depression, then a cushman scooter, than a motorcycle progression. When i was a kid he had a truck that moved for two reasons: the first was his side job, which required it, th esecond was to move the camper on long weekends.
For transportation he rode a bicycle and a motorcycle, depending on the distance he was going. Normal for work he would ride his bicycle to the El Monte bus station and then catch the RTD to downtown Los Angelis. His bike had a folding child seat on the back that, when folded, doubled as a cargo platform.
Later he got a reassignment that had him riding to a Dispatch center about a mile from home. So, pretty much through my childhood, until he retired, he rode a bicycle to work.
