Some people get different chainrings on the stock 105 triple. I think you can get something like a 24 or 26 inner ring. And smaller outer rings, too.

I went another route and swapped the 105 triple for a Deore LX MTB triple at the LBS for free. I think they had to change the bottom bracket, but the derailers and shifters were fine as is. I got the MTB crank because I like the wider q-factor (distance from frame to pedal) of MTB cranks. Also I didn't need the really high gears of the 52/42/30 105 crank. A 44x11 is more than I ever need (I don't try to go fast downhill - or at anytime - I prefer coasting :-> ). Also I now have extremely low gears in case I ever need them.

I've put about 4-5 thousand miles on the bike with the LX crank and it's worked great for me. I'm hoping to do a 7-10 day tour (500+ miles) this September. Last year I did a 7-day, 500+ mile tour on a local rails-to-trails (Katy Trail).

NOTE: I got the free crank swap after talking to the LBS owner about it while ordering the bike. I wouldn't try that after using the bike a few weeks :->
