just looked. they look like they have a backing on them like you suggested. wonder if they work after all this time. being that its a chrome frame I wonder If i could buy some clearcoat and spray over it myself..what ya think?
My experience is that most clears don't go really smoothly on a polished surface like chrome...but if these are "normal" rubdowns they are made with a lacquer ink and need protection, but you have to be very careful about the solvents in the spray, too. Lacquer thinners can cause them to "melt" and run. I recently tried the 2-pack urethane clear that Eastwood sells, but was not impressed with the texture, too pebbled, and it's $$$. I might experiment first with a test rubdown on scrap chrome, have had pretty good results with a Rustoleum clear they call "clear enamel". I might even try a brush-on clear if it has a safe solvent, just cover the transfer itself.
