I must be doing it wrong because how much thinking is really involved here? I just move the lever until I hear the kah-thunk (or hear it twice in some cases). I guess for me it's easy because I have Kelly Take-offs so I can do it while my hands are still on the hoods, but is there really a lot of thinking involved?
