After scrubbing with a water-based cleaner you need to flush with WD40. Black stuff will flow out, reminding you that water-based cleaning solutions don't really work (although we all dearly wish that they did) and that we only use them because we can't buy mineral spirits at Home Depot any more. Wipe off all the black stuff, let it dry for a while and then lube.
