+1 as well on FB's advice. Remove the chain. Soak in tub of solvent. Slosh it around, take a tooth brush to the chainlinks. Likewise, I do that with my cassette or freewheel, and repeat with my crankset and RD. All parts that handle the chain basically get the same cleaning treatment, then they get rinsed in clean water, and dried before re-installing.
