I know about the pain you're describing. I work outside and wear sunglasses most days, year-around. It's hard to tell by trying them on if they're going to be comfortable or painful after a few hours.
I used to buy only sunglasses with glass lenses because the extra scratch resistance made them usable for a lot longer than the plastic lens models. But it seems the heavier glasses are the ones that tend to cause the discomfort.
Now I'm willing to trade scratch resistance for light weight and comfort. Adjustable temples are a big plus, too.
I picked up a couple of pairs of safety glasses from Lab Safety after reading a tip in a previous thread on sunglasses. They are very lighweight, have adjustable length temples, and replacement lenses are available.
I bought two pairs of glasses --with clear and dark lenses-- and two sets of extra lenses for about $25. I wore them today and they're great!
Good riding,
