A couple years ago while on a self supported tour we stopped at a sheltered picnic table to make up some lunch next to a bike trail. A couple other bike tourists also stopped there. One of them said that he likes to take a long tour every summer and he was 85 years old.

I usually get used to the difference in handling in a few miles when loaded but I never get used to the loss in braking power. So, be careful that you start braking early when you need to slow down or stop.
