If you can find an 8-speed freewheel you'll bend or break the axle in a hurry. Even 7-speed freewheels have this problem on cheaper wheels especially when used heavily like a MTB would be.

Keep an eye out on craigslist for a MTB wheel or wheelset with an 8/9/10 speed cassette freehub.
