As for the rider not the bike:

I have a favorite area to ride in the the Bay Area that has lots of hills in the 5-15% grade range. It is in the hills right behind Stanford and the area is choke with unbelievably talented cyclists. MANY times I've been in full road biking kit clipping along on a decent climb and some dude on a 70s/80s beater, blue jeans, messenger bag and nothing but a smile comes ripping past me on their return home commute. I'm no slouch but a really good cyclist will stand out no matter what they are on and what the purpose of their ride is. It'd be horrifying if it were not so inspiring!
