It's easy to open because of the velcro flap but it's obviously not water proof. The velcro flap is open at the front/back and I've tucked a pair of long fingered gloves under the top when I knew the weather was going to get cold. There's not much padding in this and I don't think I would want to trust my multi hundred dollar smart phone to bounce around on a ride. The preferred location for my cell phone is the seat pack.
