Both Sleldon Brown and several people here say the factory lube is better and more durable than most anything else you can use. They all save leave it on until you need to add lube. I've never heard of your sitation before.
For normal riding, it works fine. I hate wet lubes because they gunk up so bad, but I find that nothing else will stay on the chain in real slop.
