I gave up sportbiking a little after I had kids... I've only crashed once and it was a low-speed slide from gravel in the road that I didn't see. Low impact, scraped up my leathers and got some nice bruises on my hip.
Meanwhile, in the years since (about 10) I've been in 4 or 5 car accidents and not ONE of them was my fault. Rear ended 3 times or so and t-boned a lady who ran a stop sign one other time. Total repair bill to 3 different cars exceeded 40 grand (one of them was nasty looking... 17k and the car was probably worth 17,001). I was uninjured in each case, even when I was hit from behind by a car traveling 40+ and I was at a standstill. Try doing THAT on a motorcycle.
So yeah, you can get in an accident in a car, on a motorcycle or on a bike, but the hazards are far greater when you're exposed to the elements. It's really up to you to decide what's acceptable or not but a lot of it is out of your hands. Good luck with your ongoing commuting though! We need more people doing that, not less.
