Actually the worst thing that happens is your bike gets wet & you have to wipe everything down & re-lube the chain or it might start to rust.
Never bothered myself. Or, more accurately, I may end up re-lubing more often in wet weather but I don't do it every time I ride in the rain. I don't have any problem with rust except when the roads are salty.
