The Crank Brothers eggbeater pedals (and I'm assuming their other pedals) have a cartridge ball bearing at one end and some sort of low-friction plastic sleeve bearing at the other end. As far as I can tell, it's a good design. I have been very happy with mine. I have two pairs with zero play, although one pair is pretty new. I've had the other pair a few years.
