Yes, when I first started reading this thread, I was at a loss to figure out why that would be necessary, then someone mentioned spoke replacement. If I needed a chain whip to replace a spoke, I would probably want to carry one with me or know a way to replicate one on-the-fly. Fortunately on my bike I can change spokes on the drive side without removing anything, but I remember when that wasn't the case, and on that bike it was always the drive side that had the broken spokes.
