i'm commuting anywhere from 22-28miles round trip using a cyclocross (Cannondale CAADX), has served me VERY well. I can go into grass to dodge ninjas, not as afraid of wet conditions and has eyelets to install racks in whatever options you want. And as someone mentioned, this was my first bike but not my last but I think it will last me because as I get better i can get a different wheel set or change cranks, breaking system etc etc, make this more of a road bike and less a cyclo.
Took me a while to settle on a bag but i finally ordered today . a Topeak MTX DXP bag. i needed something that was highly adaptable and was off my back. It had to be able to carry a macbook air 11" or my DSLR (nikon d700 with a 70-200mm) or some clothes and shoes and lunch or all these at a time! this trunk bag is so versatile i think i'll be pleased. also the quick release system makes it very convenient once I arrive.
