I believe that "Alivio" is "one step" up over the "Acera" in the Shimano components levels, Alivio is "one step" lower than Deore, etc. I have Acera on my 2012 Jamis Coda Sport and it works "VERY WELL", even when using a "triple chainwheel", jmho. LOL, well if you go to the Shimano USA sight, they don't even LIST the ACERA derailers, yet they do for Canada and Europe! My wife has Alivio on her KHS Vitamin B, fitness bike and it too seems to work well. If you buy a bike with SRAM, you'd want a Sram X5, X7, X9 etc. Still think you'd do well with the Giant Roam 1 and 2nd. set of wheel's for commuting, YMMV. Whatever you get, let us know, with a photo of course, LOL and ENJOY!
