Oh dear, I am in trouble already. The rear LX hubs for our new Thorns only cost ~$31 each.

Hopefully, building the wheels myself with Mavic A719 rims and DT Swiss straight-gauge spokes will work for us

I had a fibre-fix spoke for years, that I carried around with me everywhere. I broke a spoke on the front wheel of my fixed gear in 2007 in Europe, but rather than fiddling with the fibre-fix, I just retrued the wheel and kept riding... for more than another 5,000km. The wheel did have 36 spokes, however. The fibre-fix went up in smoke along with my home in 2009 and I don't think I will ever replace it.
