Agreed. I carry a minimal multi-tool but don't recall ever using it except to make small saddle height adjustments on a newly built bike. (Shouldn't have eyeballed it in the first place.)
The only bike crippling failures I have ever had on the road or trail were way beyond the capacities of any multitool to fix (exploded tire, broken in half frame, broken crank, pedal broke in half). The cell phone is the most capable multitool.
edit: the exceptions being a 15mm wrench for track nuts on a fixie rear wheel and, of course, tire levers.
