I've done this many times to go between Hyde Park and Watertown. What I would do is Hyde Park Ave (a little sketchy) to Arborway to Jamaicaway (beautiful) to Harvard St (bike lane). The transition between the Jamaicaway and Harvard St can be a little sketchy on Boylston St at Brookline Village, but it's easy to take side streets to avoid that if you care.
