IMHO, 8spd is enough for a majority of cyclists. My commuter is a converted mountain bike from the late 90's. Still has the SRAM 8spd gripshifters on it and I'll never replace it unless it impoldes. I've only replaced the cassette and chain which are still readily available. I don't see a need to go 9 spd if 8 spd works perfectly well.
