When I'm riding the local MUP is the only place if feel comfortable riding. I''ve got friends that ride on the Silver Comet Trail here in Georgia and they say on the weekends you have to watch out for the freight trains coming down the trail.(multiple riders in a line) These guys think the trail belong to them and everyone else needs to get out of the way. I don't want to see anyone hurt but let them hit a child one day or a pregnant mother walking. The politicians will get involved and ban the use of bikes on these trails. I believe there should be speed limits and they should be enforced but that's hard to do.
I also believe there needs to be some responsibility of those walking on these MUPs. the one I use is next to a local library and is used a lot to allow people to get to a local mall from the apartments and houses next to the trail. I'm always respectful of people on the path but every now and then you have a problem. I always try to let people know when I coming up behind them and I slow down. the path is clearly marked with a line down the middle indicating two directions of traffic. My problem happened one night when a group saw me coming from over fifty yards away and continued to take up the entire path. Even when I tried to get over to the edge they still didn't move. Needless to say I had to leave shortly after that or get myself in trouble. Everybody has to work together on this. There should be more done for both groups. Education of the bikers and the walkers to be aware of others. I've even seen where walkers had to get off the path because a group was walking the entire width of the path. The more we work together the better it will be for all.
