Your question will result in an avalanche of different opinions and arguments. The best way to gain knowledge about vintage bikes would be to search for some of the topics already discussed in the forums such as: what types of tubing are available, which geometry would work for me and my needs, what is the hierarchy of parts, etc. It will also pay off to learn more about the mechanics of vintage bikes.

In terms of commuting, try searching for touring road bikes or older mountain bikes. The later offers good value and great comfort. For sport, well, many people seem to think the Italians had a knack for speed.
