I would think waterproofness is a major consideration to a tarp. That is why I use silnylon. Really tarps and hammocks are easy to make. My tarp packs down very small and weighs very little. Cuben fiber would weigh less.

Here's my tarp:

I did a catenary cut, but a simple rectangle can be easily sewn.
