Motivation is always the key ingredient. I met Michael not long ago hand pedaling a trike. Paraplegic. He commutes daily. Rode it on an Alaska adventure 50 miles/day for 5 days.
Not a direct answer to your question, but as it seems you're an avid cyclist, might want to skip the
'tip toe' in approach for the 'dive right in,' go for quality up front stategy.
