There is a revolving driveshaft that runs from the crankset, through the downtube and into the headtube. There is a junction in the headtube. The driveshaft turns another shaft that runs down through the inside of one fork leg and turns the hub on the front wheel. The front hub has a freewheel mechanism.

At least that's how it looks to me.
