Same here; I've done no scientific testing. But I don't buy that not applying grease is going to keep the heavy-handed mechanic from over torquing the fixing bolt. Once again I'm arguing semantics that don't really matter. Whether to grease spindle tapers or not is akin to which shoe you choose to put on first. Still, I'm staying in the "grease don't hurt nothing" camp for the time being.
