i -prefer- fixed, but it's not always the perfect tool. i also prefer steel, so some consider my opinion suspect to begin with.

long steep hills and/or rough roads are my only gripes. regular inclines/wind/etc just make me work harder and i'm stronger for it later.
if you want to try one out, hit a garage sale, grab an old road bike and convert it. with patience, you can probably get away with less than $100 investment and at worst you have a fun beater. and you will get a lot more bike than the one from WallyWorld....
