I've always heard that is bad practice as it can allow the soft aluminum square taper to slide too far up the flats and thus, eventually, ruin the crank tapers. I wipe both spindle flats and crank holes down with alcohol before I install them. YMMV.
A avoid all traces of lube, too, for the same reason. I have never had a problem removing a crank either.
