You are getting the right advice that running and cycling do not build muscle per se. In fact, hours on the bike or running decrease muscle mass but increase endurance which is not a bad thing. To increase muscle size, there has to be hard short efforts with less endurance work. Track sprinters have huge legs and do mostly high intensity work and lift weights.
Even though it is impossible to spot reduce, the underlying muscle must be increased or maintained during weight loss. Core work is imperative when losing weight and the diet during weight loss is critical. I like Dr.Perricone

IMO, omega 3 fats are imperative for an athlete and may be even more important when losing weight. I cannot eat salmon but take fish oil daily which I have been doing for years. It may be one of the most important supplements especially for me since I cannot eat fish.
