From the Banff townsite there is a road that runs out to Vermillion Lakes which is only a few kms from town, and from there there is a paved MUP that runs right from the end of the pavement and goes right to the Johnston Canyon turnoff from Highway 1, which is the starting point for Highway 1A, the road that runs parallel to the main highway and goes to Castle Junction.
So they've reinstated a connection for cyclists then.
When I was a kid, that road that runs out to Vermillion Lakes joined up with the TransCanada just before the turnoff to the Bow Valley Parkway. Then they closed it off when they widened the TransCanada (I remember they were doing blasting one summer I was there!).
For us, closing the Vermillion Lakes road at the TransCanada end was annoying because that used to be a really nice route. So it's good to hear that they've compensated for it.
