Thinking back on the bike I put together in January, every part but the tires and chain wound up being ordered online. Of those parts I bought online, I checked local bike shops first for everything but the headset spacers.

The chain I purchased locally wound being up exactly twice the online price - the most expensive part of the drive train in fact, and I bought a nylon water bottle cage there also, just because I liked the shop owner.
