I had the same issue at one time, I took off the pedals and wrapped the treads with Teflon tape, reinstalled no more "pop". Sometimes the machining on the treads isn't quite correct and seems to wear over time. I know always wrap the treads of all my pedals in Teflon tape and tend to replace it at the beginning of each year.
